Student Visa

Candidate must be

  • Be enrolled in a course of study in Australia
  • Hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), or fall in one of the exemption categories
  • Must be 6 years or older
  • Prove you have a welfare arrangement, if you are under 18
  • If in Australia hold an eligible substantive visa. See, 'Have this Visa if applying while in Australia" in Eligibility Tab.

Important Notes

  • A substantive visa ceases to be in effect if another substantive visa is granted
  • Applications are received Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) (or Australian Eastern daylight standard time (AEDST) when applicable)

With this visa you can

  • Participate in an eligible course of study in Australia
  • Travel in and out of Australia
  • Work up to 40 hours every 2-week period once your course starts

How long you can stay

This is a temporary visa to study up to 5 years. The type of course and its length will determine the length of stay.

Primary school children enrolled in years 1-4 will generally only be granted a student visa for a maximum period of 3 years.

Work Visa

Candidate must be

  • Be nominated for a skilled position by an approved sponsor
  • Have the right skills to do the job
  • Meet the relevant English language requirements

With this visa you can

  • Stay in Australia permanently
  • Work and study in Australia
  • Enrol in Australia's public health care scheme, Medicare
  • Sponsor your relatives to come to Australia
  • Travel to and from Australia for 5 years
  • If eligible, become an Australian citizen

Note: Newly arrived residents may have to wait before they can access certain Australian Government payments and benefits.

How long you can stay

This is a permanent visa. It lets you stay in Australia indefinitely. The visa has a travel component that expires 5 years after the date of visa grant.

You become a permanent resident on the day we grant the visa.

For citizenship purposes

Your permanent residency starts on the day:

  • We grant the visa, if you are in Australia
  • You enter Australia on this visa, if you are outside Australia

Permanent Residency

Candidate must be

  • Hold an eligible visa
  • Have lived for at least 3 years in a designated regional area
  • Have had a taxable income at or above a specific income threshold for at least three years while holding your eligible visa
  • Both primary and secondary applicants have complied with the conditions of the eligible visa you hold or have held

With this visa you can

  • Stay in Australia permanently
  • Work and study in Australia
  • Enrol in Australia's public health care scheme, Medicare
  • Sponsor your relatives to come to Australia
  • Travel to and from Australia for 5 years
  • If eligible, apply for Australian citizenship

Note: Newly arrived residents may have to wait before they can access certain Australian Government payments and benefits.

How long you can stay

This is a permanent visa. It lets you stay in Australia indefinitely.

The visa has a travel component that expires 5 years after the date of visa grant. If you wish to travel after this date, you must apply for a Resident Return visa.

For citizenship purposes, your permanent residence starts on the day we grant the visa if you are in Australia.

Partner Visa

Candidate must be

In most circumstances, you must be the spouse (married) or de facto partner of an:

  • Australian citizen
  • Australian permanent resident or
  • Eligible New Zealand citizen

With this visa you can

This visa lets the de facto partner or spouse of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen live in Australia temporarily. Getting this visa is the first step towards a permanent Partner visa (subclass 801).

How long you can stay

Temporarily while we process your permanent Partner visa (subclass 801) application or it is withdrawn.

Business Visa

Candidate must be

  • Hold an eligible visa
  • Have lived in Australian on that visa for at least 12 months in the 2 years immediately before the application is made while holding this visa
  • Have owned and operated a business in Australia for at least 2 years immediately before the application is made

Short Term Stream

This visa enables employers to address labour shortages by bringing in skilled workers where employers can't source an appropriately skilled Australian worker.

How long you can stay

You can stay for up to 2 years or up to 4 years if an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies. Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years.

Tourist Visa

Candidate must be

  • Be a genuine visitor
  • Have enough funds to support your stay and leave

Tourist stream (apply in Australia)

This visa stream lets you visit Australia as a tourist, to see family and friends or for purposes other than business or medical treatment.

How long you can stay

Up to 12 Months
